Complement Summer Tutoring with This At-Home Learning Idea

The summer vacation is a great time for students to enjoy some time away from their studies. However, as a previous post described, a complete break from their studies isn’t conducive to their learning or progress. The Tutoring Center, Miramar FL has some information about how you can use flashcards to keep your student’s brain active at home.

Flashcards

Flashcards are one of the oldest brain training techniques and, for a very good reason, they are still used today. The reason is that they work. Well! The biggest challenge that parents face is creating appropriate flashcards to use. With subjects becoming more and more complex, it’s no surprise. However, you don’t need to return to college just to help your student with their homework. Their notebook is going to be the best place for you to start. Sit down with your student and take a look through their notebooks. Items to look out for include:
  • Notes that have been written, crossed out, and then written again
  • Notes that are written poorly
  • Incomplete notes
  • Indecipherable notes
These can all be indicators that the lesson wasn’t understood or that it presented a particular challenge. It is these notes that will form the content of your flashcards. When you are creating your flashcards, keep in mind that they shouldn’t be too complex or take too long to complete. For example, create  flashcards such as:
  • In what year was Australia settled?
  • When was the Eiffel Tower built?
  • How much water can the Hoover Dam hold?
These are great questions that can be asked and answered quickly. Avoid flashcards which include questions such as:
  • Captain Cook is known for traveling to what country and in what year?
  • Paris is home to a popular monument, the Eiffel Tower.  When was it built?
  • Completed between 1931 and 1936, what American landmark provides power and flood protection, and how much water can it hold?
While it can seem like more information is better, flashcards are best used when they are focused on small and quick lessons.
