So many students spend countless hours studying and reviewing their notes only to struggle with raising their grades or test results. This can be confusing for a student and their parents as the work is seemingly being done with little to no results, leading them to give up and accept their current grades. However, what if the problem was something as simple as the material they are using, namely, their notes.

Improve the Productivity of Your Child's Study Sessions

If the above scenario sounds familiar and you are struggling to find ways for your student to improve their grades, The Tutoring Center, Miramar FL has some information below about how the quality of a student's notes affects their study sessions and how you can help them improve.

First Things First

Just because a tip is simple doesn't mean that it isn't useful. To start off, it's time for a trip to the stationery store. After all, what student can study if they don't have the right materials?! This well get you started:
  • Notebooks
  • Multicolor Pen
  • Colored highlighters
  • Regular Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Pencil Sharpener
The shopping list started off with notebooks in the plural form because it is important to get more than one. In fact, a student should have a separate notebook for each class they attend.

Set a Format

Do you know what occupies a lot of a student's study session? Flipping back and forth between pages trying to find information. This is an easily solved problem with a little formatting. Start with the following and add or adapt your own:
  • A New Class Means a New Page.
    • Each time you attend class, start a new page. This is the most basic step in keeping your notes organized and easy to access.
  • Put the Date at the Top of Each Page.
    • The date probably doesn't seem important until it's three months later and the only thing you can remember about the class was the date!
  • Leave Space for Additions or Alterations.
    • The easiest way to ruin your notes is to cross out information and try and replace it with tiny writing in between the lines.
  • Continue Notes Over-Pages with Numbers.
    • By simply numbering notes which carry over pages you can easily avoid situations where you miss out on information because you thought the notes ended.

Watch What You Write

Remember that the lesson is about science, not dictation, so don't try to write down everything the teacher says. Instead, listen for key points which will provide you with sufficient information to perform some further research during your review and study sessions.

Um...What?

Even with the note above, some students continue to struggle with taking down as much information as they need or like and write notes which they can't read. If you aren't able to swap writing for typing or are not a fast typist, consider shorthand or your own version of it. Shorthand is a form of writing which matches small, easily marked characters with common words and remarks. While the existing shorthand may not be applicable, the idea is. Consider creating your own cheat-sheet or abbreviations you use or hear often.

Utilize the Cloud

Study sessions aren't always restricted to planned days and times. Situations like the ride to a family lunch are great times for study sessions. However, carrying around notebooks isn't always convenient. When you are reviewing your notes, consider transferring them to an online note-taking service. These services can make your notes accessible on any mobile device or computer anywhere. This means that a quick study session doing the groceries is as simple as taking a cellphone or tablet.

Listen!

While it may be at the bottom of the list, it is the most important one to take away. Listen to what is being said. If you know that you are going to be distracted by friends, then sit away from them. Are you unable to give up your social media for an hour during a lecture? Leave your phone at home. Whatever you need to do to listen, do it.
